Actor talks about the show\u2019s new season, new revelations\nand a possible future in politics<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By Lie Shia Ong<\/em> Gilles Marini was a fan favorite on the all-star season\nof \u201cDancing With the Stars,\u201d which wrapped up in December. Now, the actor\nreturns as Angelo Sorrento for the second season of ABC Family\u2019s hit show \u201cSwitched\nat Birth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the Season 1 finale, a jury had ruled in favor of the\nKennish family, agreeing that the hospital was negligent in switching their\nbaby with another child. The jury also ruled in favor of Angelo, awarding him a\nhuge settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But just as shocking as the jury\u2019s determination was, another revelation \u2013 a mystery woman who showed up in the courtroom claiming to be carrying Angelo\u2019s child\u2014threatened to further strain his relationship with his biological daughter Bay and the daughter she was switched with, Daphne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n MSN TV spoke with Marini about how Angelo\u2019s life has\nchanged when Season 2 picks up on Monday, Jan. 7, and also about how his life\nhas changed since becoming an American citizen last June. <\/p>\n\n\n\n MSN TV: How has\nbeing back on set for \u201cSwitched at Birth\u201d been?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Gilles Marini: It\u2019s fantastic. From one place I\u2019m dancing 10 hours a day and I\u2019m out of my natural element, I would say. And now I\u2019m back on set with people I really love. So, I\u2019ve been smiling quite a bit the past couple weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When the show\npicks back up, several big things have happened with your character, Angelo.\nWhat can you tell the fans about what to expect?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n [Laughs] It\u2019s an incredible, incredible roller-coaster\nride. I mean, when someone makes $5 million out of nowhere, it becomes kind of\na turmoil, and obviously he doesn\u2019t have a lot of experience, so I think he\u2019s probably\ngoing to use his money in the wrong ways, which will probably upset a lot of\npeople. There\u2019s also this mystery woman who comes into play who is claiming that\nshe has his baby. So, when I say roller coaster, I underlined it. It\u2019s very\nmuch a roller coaster. I was thinking this first season was brilliantly written,\nand sometimes you\u2019re afraid what they can do in the second season. They clearly,\nclearly know what they\u2019re doing, and the second season will probably be even\nbetter than the first one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How do you think Angelo\u2019s relationship with the families, especially with his daughters and Regina, will develop? It seems Regina still has feelings for Angelo.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I think he has this true passion and love when it comes\ndown to Regina. They have this kid, obviously, and this unfortunate event separated\nthem, so it\u2019s a long story, but hopefully they will make it work. I believe\nthat Angelo doesn\u2019t have much experience, like I said, when it comes to being a\nfather. So, he\u2019s very awkward with the girls and the girls are not young girls.\nThey\u2019re becoming women. So, they can hold their own without him, so he has a\nlot of work during Season 2 to try to get everybody together. Is he going to be\nable to make this happen? It\u2019s a big question mark. I\u2019m doing like six episodes\nright now and it\u2019s one thing after the other. It\u2019s really intense. He\u2019s trying\nas much as he can, but when he makes so many mistakes like that, sometimes people\ngive up on him and sometimes they don\u2019t. So, we\u2019ll see how long the girls can\nbe patient with him and see if they can actually make things work. Deep inside\nof him he really wants to make things work. He\u2019s just very awkward. It\u2019s very different.\nHe\u2019s got a different way of thinking, so it\u2019s a challenge. It\u2019s a complete\nchallenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the great\nthings about this show is it\u2019s not only entertaining and dramatic, but it also\nraises awareness about the Deaf community and the hard-of-hearing community.\nHow proud are you to be part of a show like this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n First of all, I\u2019m not a hundred percent sure, but I would bet on it, that this is the first TV show ever to include complete scenes with absolutely no sound. You actually feel for it. Someone like me who has no problem with hearing impairment, you cry watching those scenes. I don\u2019t think anywhere in the world that has been done. I\u2019m very, very proud of this. \u2026 I was not so much aware of this community. I went last week to a restaurant and this woman was from Spain and she watched the show online somehow and she told me she loved us and that it means so much to her. There\u2019s a lot more people who are paying attention to the [Deaf] community. So, this show becomes important more than just the drama, it becomes important. It\u2019s valuable to open the eyes of the masses about the Deaf community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Switching gears, a little bit, some of your fans sent in questions they wanted me to ask you. Kate wanted to know: During \u201cGangnam Style,\u201d one of your most memorable dances on \u201cDancing with the Stars: All-Stars,\u201d how did you manage to keep your towel on? Was it double-sided tape?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n [Laughs] It was a little bit of a hook. The first time we danced, and it kind of came off, and I was like, \u2018Oh God, oh God.\u2019 The entire dance that thing was just like coming off, so when Bruno asked me for it, I just decided to give it to him. But it was pretty intense to do that dance. I wasn\u2019t for it at first, but I was like, \u2018you know what? Those people who watch it on YouTube for the rest of their lives can actually go back and watch it and have a laugh, and if we can bring some people a little happiness by watching this dance, then we did something good.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n Katie wanted to\nknow: Has life felt any different since you became an American citizen last\nJune?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n My only dream was to become an American, so it\u2019s very close to my heart. I love America with everything I\u2019ve got. I probably will die here one day. That\u2019s how much I love this place. My kids are Americans. I submerge myself with American culture. I only have good things to say about this country. I want this country to always be in incredible shape. For me becoming an American was by far the best thing that ever happened to me besides the birth of my kids. It\u2019s really something I wanted with all my heart. So, what\u2019s changed is very simple. I always restrained myself from talking about politics \u2026 because I felt that if you weren\u2019t a citizen your voice is very limited, and you just go with the flow. I feel like now that I am an American maybe I could do something I am passionate about, and that\u2019s politics. I would love to go down that path down the line. That\u2019s probably the first time I\u2019ve ever said that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I heard that there is going to be a reunion with your \u201cDWTS\u201d competitor Kirstie Alley with a new pilot you\u2019re working on called \u201cGiant Baby.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m sitting in my room as we speak. They are waiting for\nme to finish the table read. I\u2019m working on as we speak on \u201cGiant Baby\u201d the new\nKirstie Alley pilot, yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That\u2019s pretty exciting.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s incredible. It\u2019s Kirstie Alley. We have a very fun cast.\nThe writers are very good. We\u2019ll shoot the pilot and see what happens. It\u2019s\nvery edgy. It\u2019s funny. It has a lot of heart. My character is a bit of an\nout-of-control, self-centered cocky chef. It\u2019s something I\u2019ve never really\nplayed before, so it\u2019s exciting. Kirstie is just an incredible person. I\u2019m\nhaving a good time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Season 2 of \u201cSwitched\nat Birth\u201d premieres Monday, Jan. 7, at 8 pm.
